Summer in the Chicagoland area brings a lot to love, but it also brings heavy humidity, blazing 90-degree days, and sudden, torrential downpours. If your home isn't prepared, the local climate can take a massive toll on your roof, your gutters, and your energy bills.

On the latest episode of *The Stan’dard Podcast*, hosts Liz and Kevin broke down the ultimate **Summer Survival Guide**. They looked at the critical mechanics of attic health, shared some brilliant gutter hacks, and explained how to keep your home breathing easy all season long.
If you missed the episode, we’ve got you covered with the absolute essentials.

Part 1: Attic Ventilation & "The Lungs of the Home"
Most homeowners rarely think about their attic until something goes wrong. But according to Liz and Kevin, what’s happening right above your ceiling dictates the comfort—and the structural health—of your entire house.

The Attic Heat Strain
You might think a little heat upstairs is normal, but on a standard 90°F Chicagoland day, an unventilated attic can easily skyrocket to 110°F or higher. This creates a massive block of trapped heat that radiates down into your living spaces, forcing your air conditioner to run constantly and putting immense strain on your entire HVAC system.

Why Your Roof Needs to Breathe
Kevin and Liz described proper attic ventilation as the "lungs" of the home”. To work correctly, your roof requires a strict balance of two things:
Intake: Cool air entering through the soffits at the bottom.
Exhaust: Hot air escaping through ridge vents or fans at the top.
If this balance is off, your home simply cannot breathe. The trapped, stagnant heat doesn't just make you uncomfortable; it can cause premature shingle failure and, worst of all, completely void your roof manufacturer’s warranty.

The Verdict on Solar Fans
If you're looking to boost your roof's ventilation, Kevin highly recommends solar-powered attic fans. Unlike traditional electric fans, solar fans don't suffer from frequent motor burnout issues, and because they run entirely on solar energy, they operate efficiently without adding a single penny to your monthly electric bill.

Water Management & Heavy Midwest Storms
Chicagoland summers are notorious for sudden, violent thunderstorms. Moving that massive volume of water away from your home is the difference between a dry summer and a flooded basement.

The "Bird Bath" Warning Sign
We all know clogged gutters are bad news, but how do you know they're full without climbing a ladder? Liz and Kevin shared a hilarious but highly accurate visual cue: **If you see birds taking a bath in your gutters, they are completely clogged.** If there's enough standing water for local wildlife to splash around in, a heavy downpour will instantly overflow and spill directly down your siding.

The 4-Foot Downspout Rule
Catching the rain is only half the battle; you have to route it away from your foundation.
**The Rule of Thumb:** Downspout extensions must dump water at least 4 feet away from your home’s foundation to prevent water from seeping into your basement or causing structural damage.

Evaluating Gutter Guards & Strength
If you're tired of cleaning out leaves and twigs, Kevin notes that not all gutter guards are created equal. For maximum durability and debris management, a **combination aluminum/screen guard** is often superior to flimsy plastic alternatives.
Furthermore, if you live in an area prone to heavy winter snow and ice, gutter strength matters. Kevin recommends spacing your gutter hangers (the internal brackets holding them up) **every 18 inches** instead of the standard 2 feet. This tighter spacing provides the heavy-duty support needed to keep your gutters from sagging or tearing away from the house when the weather gets rough.

Introducing the Stan's Care Club
Taking care of a home is a year-round job, which is why Liz and Kevin highlighted the **Stan's Care Club** membership during the episode.
Designed to take the guesswork out of home maintenance, membership includes regular, professional home inspections and **one free gutter cleaning per year** (saving you from ever having to climb that dangerous ladder in the summer heat). Even better? Your membership fees are credited right back to you as **"Stan's Bucks,"** which you can roll directly into future home improvement projects.
